NFL Shake-Up: Christian Wilkins Released Just One Year Into $110M Deal

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FLORIDA SPORTS CHANNEL) – In a stunning roster move, the Las Vegas Raiders have released star defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, just one year into his four-year, $110 million contract. Wilkins, who became the second-highest-paid interior lineman in NFL history after signing the deal last offseason, is now a free agent.

Dispute Over Second Surgery Leads to Shocking Exit
Wilkins’ release stems from an internal disagreement with the Raiders regarding medical treatment. Multiple reports confirm that the former Miami Dolphins standout declined repeated requests to undergo a second foot surgery for a Jones Fracture, which sidelined him for most of last season. The team reportedly believed the additional procedure was crucial for proper healing—a stance that created tension within the locker room and front office.

The Raiders released a statement on social media:

“With no clear path or plan for future return to play for Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.”

As part of the transaction, the franchise is voiding the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money from Wilkins’ contract. In response, Wilkins has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

New Regime, New Culture in Vegas
Wilkins was initially brought in by former GM Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce to pair with Maxx Crosby, forming what was expected to be a dominant defensive front. However, with the hiring of GM John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll, the Raiders are shifting focus.

This new leadership duo has emphasized building a sustainable winning culture and has made several bold personnel decisions to realign the roster with that vision.

What’s Next for Wilkins?
Wilkins is already attracting interest across the league. One possible destination is New England, where head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged the team may explore signing the veteran lineman. Still, concerns remain about Wilkins’ health status. One unnamed head coach told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini:

“He’s not healthy enough to play for the Raiders… Something must not be right.”

Wilkins played just five games with the Raiders before being injured and missing the remainder of the 2024 season.
